ETHAN USLAN
Carolina Moon: Classic Jazz and Ragtime Piano Solos
Rivermont BSW-2205

Focusing on pieces about the Carolinas (North and South), this CD features a variety of ragtime compositions spanning more than a century, from the "zippy" 1898 cakewalk "Carolina Tar Heel" to Brett Youens's haunting "Carolina Rose," composed in 2006. Along the way, pianist Ethan Uslan treats listeners to such stride piano favorites as Fats Waller's "Smashing Thirds" and Earl Hines's "A Monday Date," Scott Joplin's classic "Gladiolus Rag," the impressionistic "Southology" by bandleader Joe Sanders (of Coon-Sanders fame), the New Orleans jazz styles of Jelly Roll Morton, and plenty of tuneful Tin-Pan Alley songs, all brilliantly recorded on a 1935 Steinway grand.

Winner of the 2007 World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest (Peoria, Illinois), Uslan (pronounced "Yoo-slin") is one of the most exciting ragtime pianists in the United States today. Drawing on his extensive classical training, Uslan imbues his unique, virtuosic arrangements of rags and songs with vigor, pep, and a healthy dose of humor. He has performed at various venues and festivals across the United States and has been featured on Garrison Keillor's public radio program A Prairie Home Companion. He performs regularly around Charlotte, North Carolina, both in concert setting as well as accompanist for silent film screenings.

The CD comes with a full-color eight-page booklet featuring reproductions of vintage sheet music covers and commentary on each of the selections by the artist. 68 minutes.
