CHARLEY STRAIGHT AND HIS ORCHESTRA
That's What I Call Keen (1926-1928)
Rivermont BSW-1153
Following a successful career as a ragtime pianist, composer, and piano-roll recording artist in the 1910s, Charley Straight took up a baton and led one of Chicago's most popular dance orchestras in the late 1920s. Capable of pleasing dancers with both "hot" and "sweet" arrangements, Straight and his band held steady engagements at Chicago's Rendezvous Cafe and at the Midnight Frolics. This disc collects two dozen of Straight's electric recordings and features vocals from the Williams Sisters (Hannah and Dorothea), the Keller Sisters and Lynch, and Frank Sylvano. Most of these recordings are reissued here for the first time. The accompanying 20-page booklet features detailed liner notes by Bryan Wright, rare photographs from the collection of Vince Giordano, and complete discographical information for each of the recordings. 73 minutes.
